About the event

History of Afternoon Tea

Tea has been a popular drink in Scotland since the 18th century. Originally, due to its high cost, it was only for the wealthy and reserved for special occasions. It was not until the late 19th century that it became accessible to all. From then on, the Scots have been a nation of tea drinkers. People drank tea at home, but also would go out to tea rooms to socialise. The Scottish tradition of High Tea began around this time. High Tea was the main meal at the end of the working day and consisted of a variety of cold dishes accompanied by hot tea.
